In medicine, the majority of needle based procedures are performed "blind". Of these venipuncture is the most common invasive procedure, with over 3 billion performed worldwide per year. Even with currently available imaging aides, failure rates are 20-30% in easy access patients and 45-70% in difficult patients. Initial failed access results in higher medical care costs, hight patient dissatisfaction, and iatrogenic medical complications. Central venous catheter complications alone account for 7% excess mortality, 4.4 days' excess hospitalization, and $17,312 excess charges per patient.
